I almost always give a J.D. Robb book 5 stars, unless I really dislike the case. This book is especially deserving of the 5 stars. All the characters you've come to love are here. And they're here in duplicate! Because a movie is being made about the past Icove case and book written. it's less confusing than it sounds.
I got to fall in love with some of these characters all over again because we get to "meet" them as their younger selves in the actors that play them. It's a whole lot of fun.
The mystery is also top notch and interesting. While I didn't figure it out right away, it wasn't so convoluted that it was impossible to figure out. It also wasn't one of those mysteries where the answer seemed pulled from the ether either.
Overall, this is one of my favorite Eve Dallas stories and that's saying something considering how much I like this series.

Celebrity in Death J D Robb 9780749955915 Books Reviews
Since I have read every "in Death" title twice (except my least favorite titles), I decided to identify those titles in the series which are my favorite.
What do my favorites have in common?
1. These are the ones that have (for me) interesting cases.
2. Funny interactions between Eve and the rest of the world. Eve has a unique tale on the world and her comments are often hilarious.
3. Because of her abnormal childhood, she odd lapses in her education and social development that she is only now overcoming as an adult. It's fun for me to watch this fictional character learn to become the best human being she can be despite that horrid childhood.
4. Lots of page time for the ongoing collection of returning characters. I love her supporting characters. The cops on her team and her friends.
5. Some other unknown quality that calls to me.
Things that are NOT considered in my favorite ratings
1. The sex scenes between Eve and Roarke. Not a factor for me. Most of the time, the pages of description of their sexual couplings could be omitted without changing the book for me. I know from reading the reviews of others that the sexual relationship and the love relationship between Eve and Roarke are all that matters to some readers. I am not one of those readers.
2. Foul language. Yeah, I was shocked when I read my first "in Death" book by the prevalence of foul language. Now I mostly ignore it.
3. Whether other reviewers like the book or hate it. I decide on my own whether I like something. My parents taught me to think for myself.
Why this title is a favorite An interesting case because Hollywood is involved. I like they way Eve unravels the history of the killer in this case.
I just loved this book. J. D. Robb has kept up the quality that made her (AKA Nora. Roberts) and Eve Dallas icons of the police procedural genre.
I've read every book in this series except the last few, and decided it was time to catch up. I guess it's been a couple of years since I spent an Afternoon with Eve Dallas, the prickly and wonderful super-detective (she who stands for the dead) and her fabulous, gorgeous ,billionaire husband, Roark. "Celebrity In Death" was just like coming home, or like slipping into an old comfortable pair of shoes. Not that there isn't angst, galore, murder and mayhem in abundance, but it's got a lot less of Dallas' personal back-story than the last few I've read. It seems that Eve is finally learning to cope with her past, with the horrors that turned an abused 8-year-old into the estimable Lt. Eve Dallas of the NYPSD. This allows Ms. Robb to concentrate more on the victims and suspects than on Eve's internal struggles.
And Ms. Robb does that, here, in spades. There are more red herrings, more suspects, more motives, faked alibis, and both evil and innocent victims than in most of the previous books in this series. I sorta knew who was likely to be the killer early on, but there was just enough misdirection and red-herrings to never be entirely sure until the light bulb flicks on over Eve's head. The motive was not what one might expect, for it turns out that one of her suspects is, in reality, a serial killer who has been getting away with murder for years.
I also like that "Celebrity In Death" is about celebrities. It gives Ms. Robb the opportunity to paint much more vivid and plentiful suspects than she normally does - and all of it related back to a movie about Eve and her partner, Peabody, which sort of makes it a "play within a play", a set of nested Faberge eggs, with an unusual and ironic depth to the plot that has existed in no other Eve Dallas book.
This review is a bit late (by about three years) to be meaningful to many people, but I just enjoyed this book and Ms. Robb's masterful writing so much, that I wanted to share it with others. You might say I was "compelled" to write this review by a book that both fascinated and moved me.
I'm off to read another one.
