The City Center The New Agenda Series Volume 1 Simone Pond 9780615889115 Books

This is the second book in the series after The New Agenda prequel. Read my review.

This book is for YA coming of age youngsters. For grownups the tone is, like in the first book, very juvenile if you are used to reading spy and action novels. Our freedom fighter hero from the first book has now inexplicably been transformed into a psychopathic dictator even worse than his farther was.

How that happened is not explained. After starting the book with reasonable expectations I found the some parts so uninteresting that I started turning pages. I may have skipped the explanation.

Our heroine is now an young girl participating in a competition where the media circus surrounding the dancing finals is similar to scenes in the Hunger Games film. But everything is not what it seems, I was taken by surprise. Well done. Great concept.

For dystopian science fiction and techno-thriller fans there is a bit of everything. The latest fashion in luxurious high-rise living at City Center. Human genetic engineering. Erasing memories and uploading new personalities. The bad guys from the prequel who manage to control the new world order for 200 years. Our heroine who overcomes her programming and tries to save the day by helping the rebels. Battles, deceit, romance and madness.

For you teenagers out there this is the book for you. If you liked Hunger Games you may like this one. Grownups may have a harder time. Beware.

If you really are looking for a well written dystopian apocalyptic story, where most of the world's population is wiped out in the name of populating the world with a new master race, try Kalki by Gore Vidal. The story is brilliant, scary and understated. It may be a bit dated as it was written in the late 70s and reflect the fads of that time. Those of you, who remember Watergate, Ronald Regan and the invasion of eastern religions, have fun.

The City Center The New Agenda Series Volume 1 Simone Pond 9780615889115 Books Reviews

Before I begin, for me a 5-star book is reserved for books that are nearly perfect. Examples for me in sci-fi include 1984, Anthem, the Foundation Trilogy. 3-stars are for flawed books that are still somewhat readable - examples include much of what gets released through self-publishing. Anything less is not worth reviewing.

In "The City Center" Simone Pond blends an interesting and satisfying brew made up of ingredients from a wide range of sources including Huxley, Orwell, Meyers, Collins, and Istvan Nemere. But this well-written and edited book takes these elements and turns them into something new. Especially noteworthy is her depiction of a strong-willed heroine who knows herself and displays leadership skills while still being uncertain about her emotions and feelings.

But the book suffers from implausibility at its core the "elite" are given power not just over the clueless population of City Center, but over history as well, which belies a belief in conspiracy theories which are just patently false. Good or evil, government is by consent of the governed. While certainly "the elite" in our society may share some beliefs as those found in the book, there is no way they could perpetrate the scam they pull off in this book without earlier pushback from "the outsiders."

Further, while reference is made to a national economy, plague, and war; it is not demonstrated how this was pulled off nationwide nor how it impacted the global economy. Also, the City Center project is cast as Morray's personal pet project for Los Angeles. What influence did he have on Seattle and Denver (two cities referred to near the end)?

For most of the book Pond overcomes these flaws through compelling characters, good dialogue and well-written action. At the conclusion however she ties things up too neatly and quickly, which weakens the impact of the villain's response at the end of the story. The book should have ended at that point with the rest left for a follow-up novel, which it seems was in the works when this was published.

The City Center is a 4-star page-turner that is definitely worth the read.
Simone Pond brings the reader into a world of corruption, entitlement and power-hungry elitists. The city center seems to be a perfect utopia, protecting its inhabitants from the danger beyond the walls. But the ruling class, as they have always done, have kept a secret to themselves while controlling the populace with chemical and technological distractions.

If a secret group ever planned the demise of the the world for their benefit, I can't imagine how "The New Agenda" series isn't anything but prophetic.

What I liked engaging story, fascinating futuristic technology, and compelling characters.

What I didn't like the ending seemed anticlimactic, after the big reveal and the hero triumphs, the wrap-up was much more "tell" than "show". Perhaps it would have worked better as a prologue... But that's just my opinion.

I would have given 4.5 stars, but the rating system only works in whole numbers... Sorry! However, if it means anything, I will be continuing the series.
